This University Major Gifts Development Officer serves as Director of Development ("Director") for the Division of Social Sciences in the College of Letters and Science. Follows the lead and direction of the Senior Fundraiser for the Division of Social Sciences. Works to optimize philanthropic support for the Social Sciences, in response to academic priorities established by the Social Sciences Dean. Coordinates and executes planned strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, closing and stewardship of gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations. Focuses approximately ninety percent time on direct fund raising activities, split between major gifts ($100K+) and gifts between $1,000 - $75,000.

A general understanding of planned giving. Skill at gift negotiation, gift solicitation.
proven skill in goal achievement. Broad knowledge of the principles and practices of major gift fundraising, preferably in a University setting. Understanding of operating, capital and endowment fund development. Understanding the environment of a large, public research university. Understanding of the environment of schools, colleges or institutes within a large university. Willingness to accept responsibilities and assignments and to handle them thoroughly. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Interpersonal skills to enable harmonious and effective work relationships with academic leaders, faculty, trustees, community leaders, donors, volunteers and other staff. Sensitivity to long-term relationship building and stewardship with donors and potential donors. high level of initiative and creativity. The ability to work independently, under deadlines, without close supervision; self-direction in the initiation, coordination and completion of tasks. Acute attention to detail is essential. Knowledge of office and productivity software sufficient to function smoothly in a highly technology-based environment (including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheet, database, email, and Internet applications). Commitment to and ability to articulate the case for higher education, and UC Santa Barbara in particular.
The ability to establish a cooperative working relationship with staff; the ability to work as a member of a team, and to support the Development Office structure, obtain approvals and coordinating as needed. The ability to handle problems as they occur, and follow through on all aspects of the position. Strong professional ethics, discretion and judgment.
Notes: This is an annually renewable contract position. Willingness and ability to travel; ability to work some weekends and evenings. Fingerprinting required.
