Advancement Department: Director of Development

Esalen Institute seeks an experienced fundraising professional to develop the full potential of our annual giving program. The Director of the Esalen Fund is responsible for identifying, cultivating and soliciting donors for unrestricted gifts and flexible funding via personal solicitation, telephone, direct mail, website, social media, and events. The ideal candidate will demonstrate ability in data-mining and database segmentation along with screening and qualification of donors and prospects. Experience in supporting volunteer leaders is desirable.

Founded in 1962, Esalen Institute is a world-renowned alternative education center, dedicated to personal and social transformation. Approximately 10,000 people attend our workshops each year. This full-time position reports to the Director of Advancement and is based in Carmel with frequent visits to our main campus in Big Sur, California.

Required Qualifications:

  • Solid skill set in fundraising and 5 years of relevant experience in a nonprofit organization.
  • Understanding and appreciation of Esalen’s mission and its unique community.
  • Knowledge of data mining, wealth screening, rating and qualifying donors.
  • Strong analytic ability, organizational skills, and a passion for details.
  • Experience in mail list planning and the production of direct mail appeals.
  • Strong constituent relations orientation
  • Excellent communications skills – oral, written, and design.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Willingness to work in Carmel and Big Sur.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in online giving, and utilization of social media and other electronic communications.
  • Tenacious problem-solver, able to accurately manage complex projects.
  • Independent work ethic to carry projects through to completion and implement solutions without constant supervision.
  • CFRE and membership in professional organizations

      Compensation: The salary for this position is commensurate with experience. This position includes a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and paid time off.
